Building These Walls....

I never knew you had them,
But lately you’ve constructed a few
You build these walls to keep me away
Without a word of what’s troubling you.

You told me you still feel the love
But right now it’s just a terrible time
You don’t elaborate or give me a hint
And I fear this unbearable sign

So I lie awake when I should be asleep
I listen to the sound of my own heart beating
While you think my safety is what you keep
It’s the purpose of my love you’re defeating
When you build these walls to keep me out
And you worry that my love will desert you
I wonder what your mind is thinking about
When building these walls only hurts you

I tried so hard to reach you
But these walls you build separate us
If you knew me longer would it change things?
And would my love make you more courageous?

I know you’re hurting deep inside
But why try to go it alone?
My heart doesn’t beat for anyone else
It belongs to you, as if it’s your own

When you lie awake and you should be asleep
You listen to the sound of your own heart beating
While you think my safety is what you keep
It’s the purpose of my love you’re defeating
When you build these walls to keep me out
Because something in life has hurt you
When you wonder what my heart is worried about
Just know that I'll never desert you.
