Water Plants

There are several types of plants that you can have in and around your pond.  Many of these plants will provide a healthy balance combined with the rest of your pond, as well as help provide some shade for the fish during the hottest part of the day.  Many nurseries have information about what type of plants you can add to your pond, so check around locally for the best answers.

If you're going to have plants, it's always best to have shelves built into the pond edges so that you can set shallow water plants around the edge.  These not only add to the beauty of your pond, but they also make it difficult for predators to get to your fish.

These plants consist of, but are not limited to the following:

  • Bog or Marginal - damp roots, plant in dirt

  • Shallow Water - a couple inches of water, plant in pots or in rocks

  • Deep Water - a couple feet of water, plant in pots

  • Submerged - on the bottom, weighted, no pots

  • Floating - on the surface, no pots or dirt
